Equitable Environments in Long-Term Care (LTC)

Everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and respected in long-term care. We examine how LTC environments can better support residents' dignity and mental health, with attention to the needs of 2SLGBTQ+ and other equity-deserving older adults.

Cognitive Risk and Resilience 

Cognitive aging isn't a single path. We study the factors that put cognition at risk, and just as importantly, the ones that build resilience, so more people can keep their mental sharpness and wellbeing as they age.

Age-Friendly Environments

The WHO's age-friendly framework has shaped community design worldwide. But is an age-friendly community friendly for all older adults? We look at how these spaces serve 2SLGBTQ+ older adults and found that feeling safe to be one's authentic self is the foundation for real inclusion. We propose adding safety as a ninth domain to the WHO model, so age-friendly communities welcome everyone.

Community Mobility and Safe Driving

Getting around the community, whether by car, transit, or on foot, is central to staying connected and aging well. We study how older adults keep moving safely and independently, and what helps them stay mobile as their needs change.

Equitable Aging Science

Major aging studies shape what we know about growing older. But who actually gets counted in them? We look at how well population health datasets, like the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), reflect Canada's diverse older population. Racialized people, immigrants, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and people with disabilities are often underrepresented, and our work builds the evidence to close those gaps so all older adults count.
